It holds over a cup of peppercorns that are easily added through the large hole on the side…

My First Crush: Misadventures in Wine Country

My First Crush: Misadventures in Wine Country

$3.94

When Linda Kaplan’s husband quit his law firm in Des Moines and bought Panther Creek, a vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Kaplan went along for the ride, though she couldn’t tell an earthy wine with a hint of cherries from a glass of grape juice. It didn’t matter: They were going to make pinot noir in a small town, and they would learn how or go crazy trying. Kaplan wryly reveals in her memoir that the result was a bit of both. There are chapters on the science of wine, on the oddballs who show up for harvest, on telling a good grape from a great grape, and a good wine from a great wine. Kaplan sheds light on the mysteries of marketing wine, the connoisseurs who like to test the newcomers, and the messy business of stomping grapes barefoot. There’s even a recipe for making thirty-six thousand bottles of Panther Creek’s fine pinot noir. But Kaplan wasn’t only learning about wine. She was also learning about life, about getting along in her new hometown, McMinnville, which seems ripped right from the script of television’s Northern Exposure. Panther Creek has since become an award-winning vineyard, its wine on Wine Spectator magazine’s list of the Top 100 Wines of the World.

An Omelette and a Glass of Wine

An Omelette and a Glass of Wine

$20.36

An Omelette and a Glass of Wine, offers 62 articles originally written by Elizabeth David between 1955 and 1984 for numerous publications including The Spectator, Gourmet magazine, Vogue, and The Sunday Times. This revered classic volume contains delightful explorations of food and cooking, among which are the collection’s namesake essay and other such gems as Syllabubs and Fruit Fools, Sweet Vegetables, Soft Wine, Pleasing Cheeses, and Whisky in the Kitchen. Her subjects range from the story of how her own cookery writing began to accounts of some restaurants in provincial France, of white truffles in Piedmont, wild risottos on the islands of the Venetian lagoon and odd happenings during rain-drenched seaside holidays in the British Isles. Here we can share her appreciation of books, people who influenced her, places she loved and the delicious meals she enjoyed. Some of the best essays are those about others who wrote about food such as Norman Douglas and Mrs Beeton. She writes so vividly that we can see, taste and even smell the dishes she describes. Many of these pieces, such as ‘I’ll Be with You in the Squeezing of a Lemon,’ from 1969 – about cooking with lemons – barely show their age. But even if they did, you wouldn’t care, because of the rich store of information that David shares and the literary grace with which she imparts it. Some articles include recipes, but for the most part this is a volume nicely sized to curl up with or to take on a trip. Articles, book reviews and travel pieces, they will be new to many of her readers and a delight to all for their highly personal flavor. Jane Grigson praised it for including all the dishes most closely associated with her, Spiced Beef, Salted Welsh Duck and Syllabub. Her many admirers will cherish this new hardback edition for its 320 high quality pages casually interspersed with charming black and white illustrations and some photographs. It is a book sure to appeal to the ‘Elizabeth David’ book collector and readers coming to know Ms. David for the first time will marvel at her wisdom and grace.

Lettie Teague knows wine. She has been the wine editor at "Food & Wine" magazine for almost a decade. The only question she is asked more than "Can you recommend a great wine for under $10?" — great cheap white: Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino from Sardinia; great cheap red: Alamos Malbec from Argentina — is "What is the best way to learn about wine?" After many years of fielding these questions, Lettie was determined to debunk the myth that learning about wine is hard. She decided to find just one wine idiot and teach him a few fundamentals — how to order off a restaurant wine list without fear, approach a wine merchant with confidence, and perhaps even score a few points off a wine snob. Enter her neighbor, good friend and complete wine neophyte Peter Travers, "Rolling Stone" magazine’s longtime film critic. Peter Travers proved the perfect Eliza Doolittle to Lettie’s Professor Higgins. As a film critic he made bold pronouncements ("This movie stinks," which could be readily translated to "This Cabernet tastes like Merlot") and exhibited a finely tuned visual sense ("The cinematography could be improved" could easily become "This wine is too white"). But, most important, Peter knew almost nothing about wine. As Lettie begins their lessons, Peter puts down his ever-present glass of "fatty" Chardonnay and learns that there is a huge world out there full of all kinds of wine. He is taught to swirl his glass to release the wine’s aromatic compounds — or esters — above the rim and vows, "I’m going to do that for Martin Scorsese next time I see him. I’ll volatize my esters for him." Thus Lettie enlightens her wine-challenged but film-savvy friend about the Facts of Wine: how to hold a glass; the vocabulary of wine; how wine is made; how to read labels; how to tell the difference between grape varieties; how to make sense of vintages; how to glean information about a wine simply by looking at the shape and color of the bottle; and an overview of the great wine regions of the Old World and the New. Finally, after many fact-filled, hilarious lessons, Lettie takes Peter to the most famous American wine region of all, Napa Valley, where he hobnobs with wine and Hollywood royalty and finally puts his new skills to the test in the real world. Part buddy movie, part serious wine tutorial, "Educating Peter" is as much a treat for oenophiles in on the joke as it is for beginners who think Chablis is a brand name of wine.

The Emperor of Wine: The Rise of Robert M. Parker, JR. and the Reign of American Taste

The Emperor of Wine: The Rise of Robert M. Parker, JR. and the Reign of American Taste

$3.95

The first book to chronicle the rise of Robert M. Parker, Jr., the world’s most influential and controversial wine critic, who, over the last twenty-five years, has dominated the international wine world and embodied the triumph of American taste. This is the story of how an American lawyer raised on Coca-Cola caused a revolution in the way wines around the globe are made, sold, and talked about. To his legions of fans, Parker is a cross between Julia Child and Ralph Nader — part enthusiastic sensualist and part consumer crusader. To his many enemies, he is a self-appointed wine judge bent on reducing the meaning of wine to a two-digit number. The man who now rules the world of wine has been the focus of both adulation and death threats. He rose to his pinnacle of power by means of the traditional American virtues of hard work, determination, and integrity — coupled with an unshakeable ego and a maniacal obsession with a beverage that aspires to a seductive art form: fine wine. Parker’s influential bimonthly newsletter, The Wine Advocate, with more than 45,000 subscribers across the United States and in more than thirty-seven countries, exerts the single most significant influence on consumers’ wine-buying habits and trends in America, Europe, and the Far East, and impacts the way wine is being made in every wine-producing country in the world, from France to Australia. Parker has been profiled in countless magazines and newspapers around the world and most of his dozen books have been best sellers in the UnitedStates and abroad. Yet, despite the world’s attention and unending acclaim, Robert Parker stands at the center of a heated controversy. Is he a passionate lover of wine who, more than anyone else, is responsible for its vastly improved quality, or is he, as others claim, waging a war against centuries of tradition and in the process killing the soul of wine? The Emperor of Wine tackles the myriad questions that swirl about Parker and reveals how he became both worshipped and despised, revered as an infallible palate by some and blamed by others for remaking the world’s wine industry into a single global market, causing prices to skyrocket, and single-handedly reshaping the taste of wine to his own preference. Elin McCoy met Robert Parker in 1981 when she was his first magazine editor, and she has followed his extraordinary rise ever since. In telling Parker’s story, McCoy gives readers an unmatched, authoritative insider’s view of the eccentric personalities, bitter feuds, controversies, passions, payoffs, and secrets of the wine world, explaining how wine reputations are made, how and why wine critics agree and disagree, and tracking the startling ways wines are judged, promoted, made, and sold today. This fascinating portrait of a modern-day cultural colossus shows how a world that once was the province of gentlemen’s clubs and the pastime of stuffed shirts turned into a sensual hobby for the middle class, creating a

Atchafalaya Houseboat: My Years in the Louisiana Swamp

Atchafalaya Houseboat: My Years in the Louisiana Swamp

$14.79

In the early 1970s, two idealistic young people—Gwen Carpenter Roland and Calvin Voisin—decided to leave civilization and re-create the vanished simple life of their great-grandparents in the heart of Louisiana’s million-acre Atchafalaya River Basin Swamp. Armed with a box of crayons and a book called How to Build Your Home in the Woods, they drew up plans to recycle a slave-built structure into a houseboat. Without power tools or building experience they constructed a floating dwelling complete with a brick fireplace. Towed deep into the sleepy waters of Bloody Bayou, it was their home for eight years. This is the tale of the not-so-simple life they made together—days spent fishing, trading, making wine, growing food, and growing up—told by Gwen with grace, economy, and eloquence. Not long after they took up swamp living, Gwen and Calvin met a young photographer named C. C. Lockwood, who shared their “back to the earth” values. His photographs of the couple going about their daily routine were published in National Geographic magazine, bringing them unexpected fame. More than a quarter of a century later, after Gwen and Calvin had long since parted, one of Lockwood’s photos of them appeared in a National Geographic collector’s edition entitled 100 Best Pictures Unpublished—and kindled the interest of a new generation. That photo and many others by Lockwood are included here. With quiet wisdom, Gwen recounts her eight-year voyage of discovery—about swamp life, wildlife, and herself. A keen observer of both the natural world and the ways of human beings, she transports readers to an unfamiliar and exotic place, preserving her great adventure for those who did not make the trip in person. “I [would write] in the stern of our red and green bateau while Calvin was running nets or lines from the bow. Since ink smears when it gets wet, I used pencils on a yellow legal pad propped against the black Mercury outboard motor. Whenever it was time for me to crank the

Brewmaster's Table: Discovering the Pleasures of Real Beer with Real Food

Brewmaster’s Table: Discovering the Pleasures of Real Beer with Real Food

$19.99

Garrett Oliver, America’s foremost authority on beer and brewmaster of the acclaimed Brooklyn Brewery, wants to change your food life. In The Brewmaster’s Table, he reveals why traditional beer is the new star with today’s cuisine and how to make the perfect match. Real beer is now available almost everywhere, yet most people are familiar only with bland mass-market beer. Have you tasted the real thing? Real beer has complex flavors — it’s an affordable luxury that can transform everyday meals from dull to extraordinary. Whether it’s a brightly citric Belgian wheat beer with a goat cheese salad, a sharply aromatic pale ale to complement spicy tacos, an earthy German bock beer to match a porcini risotto, a rich, strong Trappist ale with a hanger steak, or even a fruity framboise to accompany a slice of chocolate truffle cake, the right beer is a perfect partner to any dining experience.Garrett Oliver shows you how to make it happen, whether you’re at home on Tuesday night, in a restaurant for Sunday brunch, or on vacation in Europe. He explains how beer is made, shows you its fascinating history, and then leads you through the amazing range of flavors displayed by the dozens of distinct styles of beer from around the world. Most important, he shows how beer, which is far more versatile than wine, intensifies flavors when it’s appropriately paired with foods to create brilliant matches most people have never imagined. The Brewmaster’s Table is entertainingly written by the man Gourmet magazine calls a “passionate epicure and talented alchemist” and is lushly illustrated with Denton Tillman’s gorgeous photographs of the world’s finest breweries, theirexcellent beers, and the artisans who produce them. Whether you’re a beer aficionado, a passionate cook, or just someone who loves a great dinner, this book will indeed be a revelation.

Cooking Club: Great Ideas and Delicious Recipes for Fabulous Get-Togethers

$0.01

One of the hottest trends to sweep the country in the past decade is the growth of supper clubs and other forms of cooking groups. The combination of socializing while cooking together or eating dishes made prior to meeting up has become a much-loved pastime for participants in thousands of clubs around the country. This book is a fantastic resource to starting one’s own club, and for generating theme nights for club meetings. Also included are profiles of 12 different clubs from around the country, including a vegan potluck, a wine pairing group, an adventurous eating club (think Fear Factor-style dishes), and a group who uses their meetings to raise money for local charities. Following the Introduction, “Guidelines to Starting and Maintaining a Successful Cooking Club” contains such information as how to recruit members; determining who performs what roles for club meetings (Does the host prepare all the dishes? Does everyone cook together in one kitchen? Do members cook from home and bring dishes to the club?); how often a group should meet (Once a month? Every other month?); and how to determine budgets for each meal. Cooking Club: Great Ideas and Delicious Recipes for Fabulous Get-Togethers

$23.95

Twelve themed menus, from comfort food to grilling to Italian night, are presented throughout, each menu containing eight courses, all of which can be prepared early and can easily be transported to a designated meeting place. Together these menus constitute a full year’s worth of monthly ideas safe for any cooking club. Accompanying each menu are tips to decorate and ways to make each evening’s theme stand out. Educating Peter: How Anybody Can Become an (Almost) Instant Wine Expert

$16

Lettie Teague knows wine. She has been the wine editor at Food & Wine magazine for almost a decade. The only question she is asked more than “Can you recommend a great wine for under $10?” — great cheap white: Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino from Sardinia; great cheap red: Alamos Malbec from Argentina — is “What is the best way to learn about wine?” After many years of fielding these questions, Lettie was determined to debunk the myth that learning about wine is hard. She decided to find just one wine idiot and teach him a few fundamentals — how to order off a restaurant wine list without fear, approach a wine merchant with confidence, and perhaps even score a few points off a wine snob. Enter her neighbor, good friend and complete wine neophyte Peter Travers, Rolling Stone magazine’s longtime film critic. Peter Travers proved the perfect Eliza Doolittle to Lettie’s Professor Higgins. As a film critic he made bold pronouncements (“This movie stinks,” which could be readily translated to “This Cabernet tastes like Merlot”) and exhibited a finely tuned visual sense (“The cinematography could be improved” could easily become “This wine is too white”). But, most important, Peter knew almost nothing about wine. As Lettie begins their lessons, Peter puts down his ever-present glass of “fatty” Chardonnay and learns that there is a huge world out there full of all kinds of wine. He is taught to swirl his glass to release the wine’s aromatic compounds — or esters — above the rim and vows, “I’m going to do that for Martin Scorsese next time I see him. I’ll volatize my esters for him.” Thus Lettie enlightens her wine-challenged but film-savvy friend about the Facts of Wine: how to hold a glass; the vocabulary of wine; how wine is made; how to read labels; how to tell the difference between grape varieties; how to make sense of vintages; how to glean information about a wine simply by looking at the

Excerpt: John Ruskin (8 February 1819 20 January 1900) was an English art critic and social thinker, also remembered as a poet and artist. His essays on art and architecture were extremely influential in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Ruskin first came to widespread attention for his support for the work of J. M. W. Turner and his defence of naturalism in art. He subsequently put his weight behind the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His later writings turned increasingly to complex and personal explorations of the interconnection of cultural, social and moral issues, and were influential on the development of Christian socialism. Ruskin was born in London and raised in South London, the only child of a wine importer who co-founded the company that became Allied Domecq. He was educated at home and went on to study at King’s College London and Christ Church, Oxford. At Oxford, he enrolled as a “gentleman-commoner”, a class of students who were not expected to pursue a full course of study. His own studies were erratic, and he was often absent. However, he impressed the scholars of Christ Church after he won the Newdigate prize for poetry, his earliest interest. In consequence and despite a protracted period of serious illness, Oxford awarded him an honorary fourth-class degree. Ruskin’s first published prose work came in 1834 when, at age 15, he began writing a series of articles for Loudon’s Magazine of Natural History. In 1836-37, h… More:
